I’m sure you’ve been asked the following:

“Where do you see yourself in ten years?”

Maybe you’ve been asked this during a job interview. Or, as part of a “getting to know you” exercise in school. Either way, I was asked this question in college and I can tell you now my answer was off. Like, way off.

Back then, my answer probably included words like: veterinarian, animal trainer, zoo, etc. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that ten years from then I would be sitting here, writing my very first blog as part of this exciting journey our family has decided to take in building Lake Wylie Studio.

When I started to get to know my husband, I could tell he was creative and brilliant at designing and building this or that. Brett has a knack for seeing the exact outcome of something in his mind. When he first looks at a slab of wood he can envision what it will look like as a completed table. Me? I need a drawing, at scale, and in full color.

When Brett is building, I tend to have a lot of questions. Questions like:

What are you doing?

Why are you using that weird thing?

Where did that tool come from? It wasn’t here last time…

But in all seriousness, I enjoy my trips out to the garage during the building process to see and learn from Brett. I’ve always been an academic and asking questions/learning new things is part of my nature. While I have nowhere learned enough to actually create like Brett does, I take joy in learning the process and being invested in the journey with him.

So, what is my part in this adventure? While my husband will be providing technical details of the works he creates, I hope to provide additional perspective and thoughts along the way. Here, I will share my musings of the works he creates and how as a team we are able to produce what I consider to be beautiful pieces of art. In addition, I hope that for those of you who might also have significant others that dabble in woodworking I can answer one of the most pivotal questions I’ve had: “Why is there so much saw dust in the hallway?”.
