Project Description
This commissioned series of tables is the focal point of every family gathering. Sourced from the Pacific coast of the Northwest United States, these tables were fabricated from two side-by-side slabs of Sequoia. As the design progressed the client requested a bookmatched layout for their table. The result was an overall length of 15-1/2 feet (4.72 meters), 48" wide (1.22 meters), with the top being 2-3/4" thick (7 cm), and it stands just shy of 31" tall (.79 meters). The client desired the flexibility of using the final product in a variety of settings. The decision was made to cut the table into sections; one center piece, measuring a more traditional 7-1/2 feet (2.29 meters), and a set of "leafs". However, these two leaves would be their own tables, which would free-stand separately for versatility or stand on either side of the central table for large gatherings. In its full-length configuration, the Sylva can comfortably sit a dinner party of 20 or can be separated to accommodate 28 without breaking a sweat.
The grains of this sequoia table are generally straight with a few waves. The knots in the heartwood are pronounced and offer a beautiful variation to the grain lines. The heartwood color ranges from a light pink to a deep reddish brown. The sapwood is a pale white/yellow. In this case, using black dye epoxy in the negative spaces allowed the beauty of the sequoia to be the featured attraction.
Superclear 2.0 Liquid Glass epoxy was used for the river, and the entire table was finished with Rubio monocoat. The top was polished smooth using Superclear Table Top epoxy, allowing for flexibility of interior or exterior use. A final top layer of protection from UV light, everyday scratches, and liquid spills is provided by N3 Nano Finishing by Blacktail Studio.
The exceptionally crafted legs created by Flowyline Designs offer a distinctively unparalleled look. The contemporary "Lithe" pedestal leg supports the two end 48" square tables, while the bold "Dentro" is the focal point of the center, main table. All three stand 28" tall, and are made from solid steel then powder-coated matte black for a clean finish.
